Introduction to our School

St. John's School is a village Infant School, located at the heart of Churt, which is near Farnham in Surrey.

Churt is a small village with a thriving community spirit. The children are encouraged to participate in village activities from the outset of their school life. At Christmas time we are grateful for the lovely outside lights which are put in place by a parent. We receive many pleasing comments about how lovely our school looks at this time of year!

St. John's has very close links with St. John's Parish Church and the children are guaranteed a place at Waverley Abbey C/E Junior School in Tilford when they leave after Year 2.

St John's was built in 1870 and opened a year later, so in 1996 we celebrated our 125th Anniversary. This provided an opportunity for the children to learn about the history of their school, and an excuse for dressing up!

We have three classrooms, one for each year group. The Reception classroom has also had a large, 'cabin style' extension for art work and in 2003 we opened our new Early Years Playground full of exciting new equipment!

We also have an 'Outside Classroom' - an award winning wildlife garden, complete with a study area and pond.

Here are some children having fun when it snowed several years ago!

The curriculum of St. John's is planned to help the children explore a wide variety of experiences, using their imagination and exercising their powers of thinking to make sense of the world around them; the classrooms reflect the freshness of new learning and new vision. Teaching styles used are suitable to the tasks in hand.

As we are an Infant School we are able to provide a sheltered environment for the youngest children. The earliest establishment of security and confidence enables the children to participate with enjoyment in the learning process and to develop spiritual and social awareness espousing the Christian ethos.
Our mission is to ensure that each child receives a primary education of the highest standard tuned to his or her abilities. This is delivered within a caring Christian environment where we can help him or her to adhere to a sound moral and behavioural code.

We appreciate the children's variety of background and the different levels of development within each academic year group. We lend a sympathetic ear to their problems, and those of their parents and are ready to help and guide. At the same time we aim to challenge the gifted as well as support the less able.

We encourage the children to become independent learners, to develop lively and enquiring minds which will enable them to reason, question and participate in discussion.

We hold an Open Day in October to which all prospective new parents are welcome.

If you would like a tour of the School please telephone the office and Mrs Harper will be delighted to show you around on a day that is convenient to us both.
