PROSPECTUS
St. John’s C/E (Aided) Infant School Admissions Policy
For Academic Year 2009/2010
St. John’s has a Pupil Admissions Number of 30.
St. John’s is a Church of England School and seeks to hold true to the Christian traditions and practices this implies. It is also a school at the heart of a village community. We have tried to balance these two factors in determining the entry criteria.
The intention is that thirty children may be admitted to the Reception Class each September. We welcome applications for children from all faiths and those of none, but in the event of being oversubscribed at or beyond the closing date admissions will only be made on the basis of the following criteria in the priorities given below:
1. Children looked after by the local authority
2. Children with documented social or medical needs*.
3. Children who have a sibling(s) in Years 1 or 2 when the applicant enters the School.
4. Children for whom St. John’s school is the nearest ** school admitting pupils of the same age.
5. Children for whom St. John’s is not the nearest school.
For this last category, priority will be given as follows:
a) Children of parents who are regular worshippers*** at St. John’s the Evangelist, Churt with Rushmoor.
b) Children of parents who are regular worshippers *** at a Christian church of any denomination outside the Parish.
c) All other children
If there is a tie in any category, priority will be given to those children who live nearest to the School.
Children who are unsuccessful in obtaining a place may apply to the school to be placed on a waiting list. Applicants received after the closing date may also apply to be placed on the waiting list. If vacancies occur, places will be offered strictly on the basis of the above criteria.
* The documented social or medical need must be provided by agencies and to a standard which would be fully acceptable to a Local Education Authority.
** ‘nearest’ assessed by measuring 'as the crow flies' using the SCC web site, www.findaschool.surreycc.gov.uk. The measurement for these purposes does not take into account the mode of transport used. The distance is measured from the address point of the pupil’s house as set by Ordinance Survey to the nearest gate available for pupils to use. Parents should note that if they apply for free transport different criteria apply and the distance from home to school may be measured along a different route.
*** Guildford Diocese suggests that twice a month would be a reasonable attendance record, but our concern is to prioritise those who show an active involvement in the life of the Church.
(If the family are recent arrivals into the village then the Church membership qualifications above will need to be in existence in the place from which they have come. If the school is oversubscribed in any of the above categories priority will be given on the basis of nearest** to the School, ie distance 'as set by Ordinance Survey'.
The School is committed to taking its fair share of vulnerable children who are hard to place, in accordance with locally agreed protocols. Accordingly, outside the normal round of admissions, the governing body are empowered to give consideration to a child where admission is requested under any local protocol which carries the agreement of both the governing body and the diocese for the current admission year. The governing body has this power even when admitting such a child would exceed the normal admission number.
